This quote is a note-to-self, kind of a reminder to consume less social media content and create more.
What do I consume on social media?
More often than not I find myself spending long periods of time just scrolling my Instagram feed or stories without any purpose, only for the beauty of the content. Some creators are so awesome! They seem to have a never-ending inspiration and are able to create beautiful illustrations, patterns, photographs, and crafts, or anything imaginable.
As I haven’t already refined my own style, examining the work of other people can be quite convenient even though, sometimes, has become a little dispiriting to my self-confidence. Nonetheless, making mistakes and having ups and downs is, in my opinion, part of the learning process.
So, is it good or bad to look for inspiration on the Internet? Does this mean that you lack imagination? I still don’t have an answer. Sometimes I feel I will never be any good at creating seeing that I still struggle with everything: the initial idea, the composition, the development… the only thing I am quite content with nowadays is that I’ve improved my digital drawing skills. Is that enough? I would like to think it’s one step ahead in the path to accomplishment.
Maybe it’s not only me and there is a widespread feeling amongst some people (especially women). I’ve recently discovered the “impostor syndrome” which is, as explained in Wikipedia, a psychological pattern in which individual doubts their skills, talents or accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud” which, to some extent, matches considerably my feelings about my creative journey. Time will tell.
Consume vs create
What is certain, though, is that time spent on creating, experimenting, and producing something you have to conceive on your own would be, in the end, more profitable and rewarding than the time devoted to just wandering the internet and social media. This is the reason behind my new resolution: Consume Less (internet content) and Create More (of what I really like). Do you think it is possible?
In any case, I don’t think I might be able to give up entirely my daily dose of beauty and show my appreciation to those great creators out there who deserve all our love and recognition.
